Theatre Wakefield: A Short History

In 2002, local activists from the Wakefield Ensemble were searching for a way to engage the area’s English population around issues of community development that would also generate support for local businesses. We thought that the village could benefit from a community theatre group addressing key local issues in a playful, often satirical way. Volunteers quickly galvanized around a core of well-experienced theatre professionals and talented amateurs.

For the past 20 years, then, Theatre Wakefield (TW) has developed arts and culture in the Lower Gatineau Valley. Focusing on community theatre and film, TW has produced main-stage performances, dramatic readings, heritage animation projects, Wakefield Doc Fest, the TaDa! Performing Arts Festival, various hosted productions, and a variety of training workshops.

n 2011, Theatre Wakefield moved into its brand new performance space at Centre Wakefield La Pêche and increased its operating capacity with the goal of helping to ensure the sustainability of the Centre for the regional population. By providing professional lighting and other technical equipment and services at the Centre, TW has been successful in bringing more visiting performances and productions to Wakefield.

Our organization plays a key role in Wakefield’s lively culture of volunteerism, with a pool of volunteers and members who are the heart of TW. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of operations and activities, from board management to our productions. If theatre is indeed a mirror we hold up to our world, then Theatre Wakefield is truly a reflection of the passion and dedication of our community. And we’re always looking for volunteers — come be a part of the fun!
