New Play Proposal
Want to suggest a play or event for Theatre Wakefield?
Here are a few things to think about…
Theatre Wakefield welcomes the submission of old favourites like Jeeves at Sea (our popular 2022 production), musicals like Into the Woods, and seasonal plays. We also welcome new plays or remounts, particularly those that connect with our region, set in places that community members are familiar with. We encourage regional playwrights to step forward, as well as women, Indigenous, artists with disabilities, racialized artists, and from the LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Comedy, drama, multi-media, dance, musicals, puppetry, physical theatre – all forms of shows/plays are welcome!
Our Vision Statement
Theatre Wakefield is for the community, by the community. We strive to use the performing arts, including film, to bring people of all ages together, provide opportunities for young and emerging artists, and support the creative economy of La Pêche and its residents. We work with artists and community groups to create collaborative, community-focused arts programming and festivals. With everything we do, Theatre Wakefield is committed to producing diverse and inclusive art and serves as a catalyst for comunity creation.
Theatre Wakefield is looking for plays that touch on at least some of the following artistic ideas:
- The play or event is community minded.
- Does the play allow for community involvement?
- Does the play invite multigenerational casting?
- Is the work relevant to the people of our region?
- Does it reveal an important question or theme that our world is seeking to answer (i.e. the environment)?
- Who’s it for? What kind of show is it?
- Does the content resonate on many levels, regardless of age, gender, race?
- Is the work entertaining, fun, serious, and/or surprising?
- Contemporary or older work
- Does the work speak to what is happening in current movements, thoughts, trends, and ideas in culture or in the performing arts?
- Was it made, written, revised in the last ten years?
- If the work is older than ten years, eg. Shakespeare or a musical, does the work connect with a contemporary audience? Does it have themes that reflect what is happening in the community or world now?
- Inclusive and Innovation
- Will the work bring often marginalized voices to the center (including women, artists with disabilities, racialized artists, Indigenous artists)? Does the work avoid negative stereotypes of these groups?
- Does the work have a unique and distinguishable voice that is new to Theatre Wakefield and our region?
- Is the work breaking new ground in the art form and telling a story in an original way?
Practical considerations when thinking about a play for Theatre Wakefield:
- Is there a producer, director, stage manager in place for the work?
- How many actors are needed?
- How long is the play? Is there an intermission?
- What kind of space/venue is needed for the work?
- How much are the rights to produce the work?
- What will it cost to produce the work (director, stage manager, producer, tech director, set design, costumes, theatre rental, etc.)
- Could this work tour to another part of our region?
